- DTL DataSpot 1.2 (Windows NT & Windows 95)
- =============================================================
-
- DTL's DataSpot is a product for plain-language database search on the
- Internet. DataSpot enables a data provider to publish large heterogeneous
- databases on the Internet or Intranet easily and efficiently.
-
- The DataSpot Publisher enables the data provider to create a single,
- integrated DataSpot database from heterogeneous data sources, including external
- knowledge sources such as a thesaurus. The DataSpot Query Server
- conducts the associative search and navigation process. End users invoke the
- server transparently by issuing plain-language queries from a standard Web
- browser such as Netscape's Navigator or Microsoft's Internet Explorer.
-
- DTL DataSpot software is subject to the terms detailed in the license agreement
- accompanying it.
-
- =============================================================
- System Requirements
- =============================================================
-
- Before installing DTL DataSpot make sure your system has the following:
-
- * 32 MB of free memory (minimum)
-
- * 40 MB of available disk space (minimum)
-
- * Pentium or Pentium Pro processor
-
- * Windows NT 3.51 or higher, or Windows 95
-
- * To allow users to access the DataSpot Server across the Internet you
- must also have a direct Internet connection and related software.
-
- * See "Installing DataSpot" below for other required or optional software
- that should be installed prior to installing DataSpot.
-
- =============================================================
- Installing DataSpot
- =============================================================
-
- Before installing DataSpot, you should install the following software packages:
-
- - To use the DataSpot Query Server, you should install a Web Server. DataSpot
- currently works with either the Microsoft Internet Information Server
- (Versions 1.0, 2.0 or 3.0) or Microsoft Personal Web Server (Version 1.0)
- or Netscape Enterprise Server (Versions 2.0 or 3.0) or FastTrack Server
- (Version 2.0) or any other server that supports CGI, including ZBSoft's
- ZBServer Pro. During the DataSpot installation you will be asked to
- designate Web server(s) that will be automatically configured to work with
- DataSpot. You can also configure a Web server manually by following the
- instructions in "Configuring Web Servers" below.
-
- - If you want to use the HoTMetaL Pro 4.0 HTML editors to edit DataSpot
- template files then you need to install one or both of them so that during
- the DataSpot installation they will be automatically configured to work with
- DataSpot. You can also configure these editors manually by following the
- instructions in "Configuring the HoTMetaL Pro 4.0 Editor" below.
-
- - If you plan to use DataSpot Publisher with ODBC data sources, then
- you need to install the corresponding ODBC drivers.
-
- * Installation: to install DataSpot run the setup.exe file. For more
- information, or if you experience any problems, see "Installation Notes"
- below.
-
- * Uninstallation: to uninstall DataSpot, do the following: if you are using the
- Windows 95 Explorer shell, run "Add/Remove" programs from the Control Panel and
- select to remove DataSpot. If you are using the Windows NT Program Manager,
- double click on the "Uninstall" icon in the DTL group.
- We recommend that you first read "Uninstallation Notes" below.
-
- * Directory Structure
-
- The installation creates a directory tree with the following structure:
-
- +--DTL
- |
- +--PROGRAM\
- |
- +--SAMPLE\

- * Installation Notes
-
- Subject to the license(s) you purchased you may choose to install a DataSpot
- System for Development or for Production. The Development DataSpot System is
- intended for publishing and testing a databases on your computer. It is limited
- to one user issuing queries at a time. The Production DataSpot System is
- intended for publishing databases on the internet or intranet, and is typically
- installed on a Web server computer. It allows multiple users to issue queries
- concurrently.
-
- As part of the DataSpot installation in Windows NT the DataSpot Server will
- be installed as a service in automatic startup mode. When installing on
- Windows 95, which has no services, you will be asked if you want the DataSpot
- Server to be started automatically when you boot your computer (the default).
-
- If the installation fails to configure a Web server to work with DataSpot
- Query Server, or if you wish to configure a Web server manually, follow the
- instructions in "Configuring Web Servers" below.
-
- If the installation fails to configure SoftQuad's HoTMetaL Pro 4.0 editor to
- work with DataSpot template files, or if you wish to configure them manually,
- follow the instructions in "Configuring the HoTMetaL Pro 4.0 Editor" below.
-
- WARNING REGARDING MANUAL INSTALLATION: If you manually configure a Web server
- or an editor and later uninstall DataSpot, you will need to
- manually undo these configurations.
-
- As part of the DataSpot installation the dtl\program directory is added
- to the PATH variable. However, if the setup program fails to set the PATH
- you should do it manually. In Windows NT, go to the control panel / System
- and select the Environment tab. Add the directory where dtl\program was
- installed to the PATH variable. In Windows 95, edit the Autoexec.bat file
- and add the directory to the PATH= clause. Beware not to exceed the
- default maximum length (128 characters). You should manually remove
- unneeded entries from the PATH before adding DTL to it if the maximum
- length is reached.
- Note that the Netscape Enterprise Server appears to ignore the change to
- the PATH. As a result, after the installation the Netscape Enterprise Server
- may fail to restart and give an error message such as "hbdispif.dll not found
- in ..." where ... is the old value (directory list) of the PATH variable.
- Rebooting the computer at the end of the installation should solve this problem.
-
- * Uninstallation Notes
-
- The DataSpot uninstallation process sometimes fails to completely "undo" the
- installation. The following are known problems:
-
- - Log files, such as "aso.log", "aso_err.log", "dispdll.log" are not removed.
- Remove them manually.
-
- - The files hbdisp.dll and hbquery.dll are not removed. Make sure the
- DataSpot Server is stopped and then remove the files.
-
- - The files hbhext.dll, hbdispif.dll or hbadmin.dll are not removed.
- Temporarily stop the Web server(s) configured to work with DataSpot Query
- Server, remove the files, and restart the server(s).
-
- - Other files or directories under the DTL root directory are not removed.
- Verify the specific files mentioned above have been removed, and then
- retry. If that fails, try rebooting and then removing the files or
- directories.
-
- - If a user aborts the uninstallation process and later on tries again to
- uninstall DataSpot, the user may get an error message such as "Setup
- requires _SETUP.DLL and _ISRES.DLL...". To correct this problem locate
- the file _isres.dll in the installation directory (e.g. on the CD) and
- copy it to the dtl\program\setup directory, and then try again.
-
- - The configuration of a Netscape Enterprise or FastTrack Server to work with
- DataSpot Query Server is not undone, and the server may fail to start.
- This is because the DataSpot entries in the "obj.conf" file associated with
- the Netscape server were not removed -- see "To configure Netscape
- Enterprise or FastTrack Server" below. Edit the "obj.conf" file and remove
- the DataSpot entries (you can use the saved copy of the "obj.conf" file
- created during the DataSpot installation if you haven't made changes to
- your configuration since). Then use the Netscape Administration Server
- (Server Selector) to load the modified "obj.conf" file and stop and then
- start the server you configured. Alternatively in Windows NT you may open
- Control Panel/Services and select the service associated with that server.
- Stop the service and then start it.
-
- =============================================================
- Configuring Web Servers
- =============================================================
-
- When DataSpot is installed, it presents a list of the installed Web servers
- and lets the user select the servers that should be configured to work with
- the DataSpot Query Server. However, if the automatic configuration fails, or if
- you install or upgrade a Web server after installing DataSpot, you can configure
- the Web server manually by following the instructions below (see WARNING
- REGARDING MANUAL INSTALLATION above).
-
- IMPORTANT: when following the instructions %DTL_HOME% should be replaced by
- the full path to the directory where DataSpot was installed (by default \dtl),
- %DTL_HOME_2% should be replaced by the same path with backward slashes replaced
- by forward slashes (e.g. /dtl).
-
- * To configure Microsoft Internet Information Server or Personal Web Server:
-
- - Use the Internet Service Manager to create a virtual directory /DTL that
- points to the root directory of DataSpot: make sure the WWW service is
- running and double-click on it (or select "Service Properties" from the
- "Properties" menu). Select the "Directories" tab. Click "Add". In the
- directory field enter or browse to %DTL_HOME%. Choose "Virtual Directory"
- and in the Alias field enter "DTL". Select both "Read" and "Execute" access.
- Click OK and again OK.
-
- - Associate the ".adb" extension with the executable "hbhext.dll": run the
- registry editor (regedt32.exe), open the key "\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\
- CurrentControlSet\Services\W3SVC\Parameters\Script Map". Add a new value
- whose name is ".adb", whose type is "REG_SZ", and whose string value is
- "%DTL_HOME%\program\hbhext.dll".
-
- To apply the changes, use the Internet Service Manager in NT or the Personal
- Web Server in 95 to stop and then start the WWW (HTTP) service. Alternatively
- in Windows NT open Control Panel/Services, select the World Wide Web Publishing
- Service, stop the service and then start it.
-
- * To configure Netscape Enterprise Server or FastTrack Server:
-
- You need to modify the "obj.conf" configuration file for the server you wish
- to configure. The configuration files for server XXX are located in a directory
- named "config" a few levels below the directory where Netscape was installed
- (e.g. \Netscape). You can find the configuration directory by looking at the
- value of "ConfigurationPath" under the registry key for the server.
- For Netscape Enterprise Server version 2.0 the key is located under
- "\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Software\Netscape\https-XXX", and for version 3.0 it
- is located under "\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Netscape\Enterprise\3.0\https30-XXX".
- For FastTrack Server version 2.0 the key is located under
- "\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Software\Netscape\httpd-XXX".
-
- First, we suggest you save a copy of the "obj.conf" file. Next make sure the
- "obj.conf" is writable. Then make the following additions to the file.
-
- Immediately before the first occurrence of "<Object name=" in the file, add the
- following lines:
-
- #DataSpot
- Init fn="load-modules" funcs="DataSpotRequest" shlib="%DTL_HOME_2%/PROGRAM/HBHEXT.DLL"
- Init fn="load-modules" funcs="DataSpotAdmin" shlib="%DTL_HOME_2%/PROGRAM/HBADMIN.DLL"
-
- (note that the path names, including %DTL_HOME_2%, should be specified using
- forward slashes).
-
- # DataSpot
- <Object name="adb">
- PathCheck fn="nt-uri-clean"
- PathCheck fn="find-pathinfo"
- Service fn="DataSpotRequest"
- AddLog fn="flex-log" name="access"
- </Object>
-
- <Object name="adb-admin">
- PathCheck fn="nt-uri-clean"
- PathCheck fn="find-pathinfo"
- Service fn="DataSpotAdmin"
- AddLog fn="flex-log" name="access"
- </Object>
-
- Immediately after the first occurrence of "<Object name=default" in the file,
- add the following lines:
-
- #DataSpot
- NameTrans fn="assign-name" from="*.adb" name="adb"
- NameTrans fn="assign-name" from="*/hbadmin.dll" name="adb-admin"
- NameTrans from="/dtl" fn="pfx2dir" dir="%DTL_HOME_2%"
-
- (note that the %DTL_HOME_2% should be specified using forward slashes).
-
- To apply the changes, use the Netscape Administration Server (Server Selector)
- to load the modified "obj.conf" file and stop and then start the server you
- configured. Alternatively in Windows NT open Control Panel/Services and select
- the service associated with that server. For a Netscape Enterprise Server
- https-XXX the Web service is called in version 2.0 "Netscape Enterprise Server
- https-XXX" and in version 3.0 "Netscape Enterprise Server 3.0 (XXX)". For
- a Netscape FastTrack Server httpd-XXX the Web service is called in version 2.0
- "Netscape FastTrack Server httpd-XXX". Stop the service and then start it.
-
- * To configure ZBSoft's ZBServer Pro Server:
-
- - Use the ZBServer Log Manager to create a virtual directory /DTL that
- points to the root directory of DataSpot: select "Shared Folders..." from the
- "Edit" menu. Click "Add Folder" button. Choose %DTL_HOME% directory (this will
- be automatically entered in the DOS path field). In the URL path field enter
- /dtl, and click on the CGI check box (in the "Allow" group). Click OK.
- To apply the changes, restart the server.
-
- - Make sure the value of PURECGI under the
- "\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Software\DTL\DataSpot\1.0" key is set to 1.
- This will enable DataSpot to operate in CGI mode (which is necessary
- e.g. for ZBSerevr).
-
- =============================================================
- Configuring the HoTMetaL Pro 4.0 Editor
- =============================================================
-
- When DataSpot is installed, it asks the user if the HoTMetaL Pro 4.0 editor
- should be configured to work with DataSpot template files. However, if the
- automatic configuration fails, or if you install or upgrade HoTMetaL after
- installing DataSpot, you can configure HoTMetaL manually by following the
- instructions below (see WARNING REGARDING MANUAL INSTALLATION above).
-
- First you will need to register DTL's design-time control module for HoTMetaL,
- HBHMDTC.OCX. To register the OCX, open a command line window and type:
-
- %DTL_HOME%\program\setup\regsvr32.exe %DTL_HOME%\program\hbhmdtc.ocx
-
- This will register the OCX by adding a class-id key in the registry for each
- class defined in the OCX. The classes are registered under the keys:
- HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\HBHMDTC.%Class%
- (Where %Class% is the class name, such as AnswerList, QueryForm etc.)
-
- Now, for each class added in the registry, run the command:
-
- %DTL_HOME%\program\setup\regsvrdc.exe HBHMDTC.%Class%
-
- When working with DataSpot Publisher select the "HoTMetaL Template" option from
- the "Options" menu bar.
-
- To check the HoTMetaL configuration for DataSpot, start the HoTMetaL Editor
- and open a document. Select from the "Insert" menu the "Design Time Control..."
- option. You should see various DataSpot items, such as query form and answer
- rank, in the list of available components.
-
- * Special Notes For HoTMetaL Pro 4.0 Users
-
- If you are using the HoTMetaL Pro 4.0 editor to edit template (.htx) files,
- please pay attention to the following:
-
- - In order to line-up the SQ.DTC (SoftQuad Design Time Control) tags,
- go to any SQ.DTC tag (see display bar on lower-left corner of HoTMetaL editor
- window). Select Tools / Display / Option / Modify... from the editor top menu
- bar. Click the 'inline' radio button. This will change the display from a
- block structure to an inline structure.
- - The editor will display internal comments on the screen when updating and
- adding DTCs. This is currently a normal behavior of HoTMetaL (the DTC enters
- comments as if you had typed them in and thus HoTMetaL shows you these
- comments). You need to refresh the document in order to hide the comments. One
- way to refresh the document is to change from "WYSIWYG" view to an
- "HTML-Source" view, and then to change back to "WYSIWYG" view mode.
- - On slow machines the DTC response time may be long. Please wait until the
- DTC is loaded.
-
- =============================================================
- Running DataSpot
- =============================================================
-
- If you are using the Windows 95 Explorer shell (on NT server version 4.0 or
- higher), run the DataSpot programs from the "Programs\DTL Applications" menu.
- If you are using the Program Manager, (on NT 3.51), the DataSpot programs are
- located in the "DTL Applications" group.
-
- * Demos:
-
- To test the DataSpot Query Server run the "DataPot Demos" program.
-
- When you execute the demo a Web browser should open and let you choose to
- search one of two demo databases. One database contains information about
- Washington State Wines and the other contains information about classified ads.
- If the demo does not run properly make sure that the DataSpot Server and your
- Web server services are running (you can check that in NT by opening "Control
- Panel/Services", and in Windows 95 by looking at the Taskbar), and then try
- again.
-
- * DataSpot Publisher
-
- Use DataSpot Publisher to automatically integrate data from your data sources
- and construct a DataSpot Web View (.ADB) file and an associated display template
- (.HTX) file.
-
- If you experience any problems see "Troubleshooting" below.
-
- * DataSpot Query Server
-
- Use DataSpot Query Server to search and navigate a DataSpot Web View (.ADB)
- file. A user connects to the server by using a standard Web browser and
- specifying a URL that references the file to be explored (e.g. by following a
- link). If the DTL root directory is dtl-path (default \dtl) and the Web View
- file is located in \dtl-path\adb-path, (e.g. adb-path for the demo wine database
- is \sample\wines\wine.adb) then the URL should be http://HOST/dtl/adb-path?,
- where HOST identifies your computer (e.g. a host name or an IP address), and
- where adb-path is converted to forward slashes (e.g. /sample/wines/wine.adb);
- note that the mapping from URL /dtl to directory dtl-path has already been taken
- care of during installation. TIP: to access the server on the local computer you
- can use the special IP address 127.0.0.1 (if your browser uses a proxy you need
- to set it such that the proxy is not used for local addresses such as 127.0.0.1).
-
- If you wish to use a Web server configured to work on port number NNN (e.g.
- if you have multiple Web servers on the computer), you should use a URL of the
- form //HOST:NNN/dtl/... Port 80 is the default and may be omitted.
-
- If you experience any problems see "Troubleshooting" below.
-
- =============================================================
- Troubleshooting
- =============================================================
-
- The following problems may occur when using DataSpot Publisher or DataSpot
- Query Server. We recommend that you check the "Frequently Asked Questions" page
- in the DataSpot Web site (http://www.dataspot.com) for the latest updates to
- this list.
-
- * DataSpot Publisher
-
- - Publisher error 3041 trying to read an MS Access MDB file. This may happen
- because the associated DLL, msrd2x32.dll, was not registered, or because
- of compatibility problems between the versions of MS Access used to create
- and to read the MDB file. Use regsvr32.exe to register the DLL, e.g. type
- the command "regsvr32.exe msrd2x32.dll". If the problem persists, try
- compacting the MDB file. This can be done using MS Access or ODBC (through
- Control Panel/ODBC/Add/Compact).
-
- - Publisher error 3170 ("Couldn't find installable ISAM") trying to read a
- DBF (or other) file. This happens because the associated DLL, e.g.
- msxb3032.dll, was not registered. Use regsvr32.exe to register the DLL,
- e.g. type the command "regsvr32.exe msxb3032.dll".
-
- - Generator error 2: out of heap space.
- Geneartor error 1103: out of disk space.
- These errors happen when the generator cannot allocate necessary buffer space,
- usually since there is not enough free space on the disk. Free some disk space
- and try again.
-
- NOTE: During the generation process, the generator creates a temporary working
- directory. If the Generator's input file is XXX.DSP, located in directory DDD,
- then the temporary working directory is located under DDD and is named XXX.$0$.
- DataSpot Version 1.2 uses either the TMP or TEMP environment variables (in
- this order) to determine another temporary directory used for various sort files
- created during the generation of DataSpot Web View (.ADB file). If neither of
- these variables are defined, the genarator uses the above temporary working
- directroy to store also the temporary sort files.
- Make sure that if either the TMP or TEMP variables are defined, they point to
- a valid directory with sufficient disk space. Moreover, placing the temporary
- directory in a different disk drive may imrove the Generator's performance.
-
- - Generator error 48: Error in loading DLL (hbconv)
- (This error may be trailed by a few other errors as well.)
- This error happens when the generator cannot find neccessary ODBC files. To
- correct this, install ODBC32 Administrator.
-
- * DataSpot Query Server
-
- - "Object Module not found": see if either hbhext.dll or hbdispif.dll are
- missing from the dtl\program directory.
-
- - The Microsoft Internet Information Server returned an unrecognized
- response or "file contains no data". This problem may occur on a first
- reference to a URL and is usually fixed simply by reloading (refreshing).
- You can also try clearing the browser's disk and memory caches and then
- reloading.
-
- If the problem persists, stop the Web server and reinstall the Dataspot
- Query Server as follows. Open a command (DOS) window, change directory
- to the \dtl\program directory, and type the following four commands:
-
- hbsvc.exe stop
- hbsvc.exe remove
- hbsvc.exe install
- hbsvc.exe start
-
- Then close the command window and restart the Web server.
-
- - "Cannot connect to DataSpot server": verify that the DataSpot Server is
- started.
-
- - "Connection Timeout": verify that the Web server you are using (on the
- specified port, or default port "80" if none is specified) is running.
- In Windows 95 the Server would be accessible from the task bar or the
- start menu. In Windows NT the server would likely be a service listed
- under "Control Panel/Services". For the Microsoft Internet Information
- Server the Web service is called "World Wide Web Publishing Service".
- For a Netscape Enterprise Server https-XXX the service is called in
- version 2.0 "Netscape Enterprise Server https-XXX" and in version 3.0
- "Netscape Enterprise Server 3.0 (XXX)". For a Netscape FastTrack Server
- httpd-XXX the Web service is called in version 2.0 "Netscape FastTrack
- Server httpd-XXX". Stop the service and then start it.
-
- - Could not open file: verify that the URL for the ADB starts with
- "http://", not with "file://"
-
- - "File not found": verify that the URL for the ADB correctly points to the
- file. If the URL is http://.../dtl/adb-path/xxx.adb?, and if /dtl is mapped
- to directory dtl-path, then the ADB file should be in
- \dtl-path\adb-path\xxx.adb (where adb-path is converted to backward
- slashes).
-
- - "Template file missing or incorrect": See if there is a template file
- collocated with the ADB file. I.e. if the URL refers to file xxx.adb,
- there should be a template file xxx.htx in the same directory. If the file
- is there and has read permission, see if its syntax may be incorrect.
-
- - Netscape error: "There was no response. The server could be down or is
- not responding..." OR Microsoft IIS error: "Internet Explorer cannot open
- the Internet site http://127.0.0.1/dtl/defautlt.htm..." when running
- DataSpot DEMOS with ZBServer. This happens since ZBServer does not recognize
- "127.0.0.1" or "localhost" as valid URLs. Use your machine IP address instead.
- e.g. open the URL: http://<IP Address>:<ZBServer Port>/dtl/default.htm in your
- internet browser to access the DataSpot demos.
-
- - "Session time out": This error usually informs you that the query session has
- timed out. You can simply start a new query. However, when working with
- DataSpot Development System (the default in Windows NT and a must in Windows 95)
- with two or more users simultaneously, this error indicates that only one user
- is allowed.
-
- =============================================================
- Improving Publisher Performance
- =============================================================
-
-
- In order to improve the performance of the publishing process on Windows/NT,
- you should do the following:
